Getting to know: Brittany Miller

So I’ve known about Brittany in the Cape Town plant scene for a while now- she’s the founder and owner of mamma’s plants. And we even did a collab for one of the first subscriptions of Saffron’s Garden Plant Club. We recently decided to do an in depth plant-intro with each other to get to know one another better. Here are the results:

  1. Where did your love for houseplants begin?

I’ve always thought that plants were pretty cool, but I started taking the hobby more seriously about 5 years ago when I moved out of home and into my own space. Plants became a full on passion at the beginning of last year 🙂 I’m slowly but surely turning out home into an urban jungle.

2. If you had to choose, what would you say your favourite houseplant is?

Eish! This is tricky! I think it would be my Monstera adansonii or string of hearts. Or maybe my variegated monstera? Yes, that one!

3. What is your least favourite houseplant?

I have mixed feelings about zz plants, and I am not so sure about staghorns.  Used to think hoya’s were weird too, but I slowly coming to appreciate them 🙂

4. Are you an overwaterer or underwaterer?

I used to be an overwater-er for sure, but I’ve since cut back a lot and would say I’m more of an underwater-er now.

5. What plants would you recommend to those wanting to get into houseplants?

I’d definitely start off with pothos, heart-leaf philodendron and monstera. Nothing beats a vining plant!

6. What plants are on your wishlist right now?

Far too many. Syngonium rayii, anthurium clarivernium, calathea flamestar, monstera thai constellation, pothos cebu blue, monstera dubia, Variegated Maranta Leuconeura and Dischidia Million dollar to name a few haha…

Getting to know the plant community is so much fun and it was so great getting to know Brittany better. And at least I know now to not gift her a staghorn (hehe). Thanks so much for your time Brittany!
